Rohloff twist shifter for SPEEDHUB 500/14. Original version has a triangular grip shape and gear numbers are molded into shifter grip. Current version has a round grip shape that is more comfortable to ride your hand on and gear numbers are painted in white onto cable pulley for better visibility and won't wear down as grip wears. Current version is also lighter and the clamping mechanism is approved for use on carbon handlebars. Also available in separate left and right hand versions (right-hand version ships stock with new hubs, but left hand version can be supplied upon request).

The HubBub bar end adaptor allows the use of the Rohloff twist shifter on a conventional road drop handlebar. It installs into the end of the handlebar with a 6mm allen key, and the Rohloff shifter slides over the shaft and tightens in place as usual.  Compatible with all versions of the Rohloff twist shifter.

The Rodriguez Doohicky headset spacer adapter allows the Rohloff twist shifter to mount onto the steerer tube for easy access and clean cable routing with drop bars.  An alternative to using the Hubbub adapter.

The Gilles Berthoud twist shifter for Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 gear hub is designed to fit on drop style road handlebars or flat mountain handlebars depending on the shim being used. The Co-Motion twist shifter for Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 gear hub is designed to fit on drop style road handlebars with a 31.8mm clamp diameter. Shifter mounts next to the stem, allowing full use of the "top" section of the handlebars and shifting from an upright riding position.

Manufactured in-house at the Co-Motion facility in Eugene, OR from 6061 aluminum, then hard anodized black and laser etched for easy viewing. A clean and simple two piece design incorporates two O-rings to seal out water and dust. Brake cable passes through slot inside shifter.

The GEBLA Rohbox is a ratcheting shift box for the Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 14-speed internal gear hub that allows shifting with trigger shifters on a flat bar or road brake/shift levers (brifters) on a drop bar. It replaces the stock Rohloff cable box allowing shifting with modified SRAM or Campagnolo shifters instead of Rohloff's twist shifter. Separate levers are used for up shifting and down shifting.

Available separately or bundled with a set of road or mtb shifters.*

The Shift:R, made by Cinq, is the first thumb shifter available for the Rohloff SPEEDHUB. It replaces the Rohloff twist shifter and cable box. The shifter features separate levers for high and low gear. It can be used on drop bars or flat bars. Cable tension can be adjusted at the levers and the ratchet box. It also allows riders to use full size grips rather than shortened grips designed for twist shifters.

  1. Great article. I would like to make a suggestion for the cinq5. Since you commented about the learning curve with individual l/r shift levers, it got me thinking. How about putting them both on the right side. One lever on top of the other. That way you have room on the left bar for accessories like the dropper post or lockout levers.

    1. That could definitely work - would just need to figure out the ergonomics. I will pass the suggestion along.

  2. Could the cinq5s be mounted below the levers in such a way that they could be operated on whilst on the hoods? I had a pub bike, made up of spares from scrapyards etc, that I had a 6 sp kids MTB thumb shifter on the inside of my drops that I could operate whilst on the hoods

    1. Yes, but you would need to make your own clamps. The stock clamps are offered in 22.2mm or 31.8mm and almost all drop bars have 23.8mm diameter where the brake levers mount.

  3. and another thought: could a GB or co-motion be positioned on the straight/ergo part of the bars below the levers?

    1. GB yes, CM no....at least not without a shim of some sort to get from 23.8mm to 31.8mm.

  4. Hi. For the Rohbox - does it work like a regular trigger shifter where you use the finger to shift up and the thumb to shift down, or do you use one thumb shifter on each side - one side for up and one side for down? Thanks.

    1. Both the Rohbox and Cinq5 setups use two shifters, one on each side, with one changing to a harder gear and one changing to an easier gear. Which shifter does what is your choice based on how you connect the cables.

  5. Hi Neil,
Is there any interest in creating brifter shifting without the external shift box? Thinking a constructuer bike application utilizing internal shifting.
    Cheers,

    1. Nothing we have seen. The external mech is so much easier to work with and universal. The internal mech is technically not compatible with a disc brake, though some companies have done it with a custom cable guard built onto the frame.

Why does the external mech not work in your application?

  6. Would either the Gilles Berthoud or the Co-Motion work with cross brake levers?

  8. The world needs a full-grip twist shifter for recumbent trikes. The orientation of the grip on a trike is opposite that of a flatbar, so the rider must use his pinkie finger to shift vs his thumb & forefinger on a flatbar setup. This is uncomfortably difficult due to the resistance caused by the hub's internal friction, cable friction, etc.

  9. Could you use a cinq5 system with two 'travel agents' somewhere in the cable line to double the cable-length pulled, so you could change through more gear ratios in one go? Also, on a drop handlebar, could you use a bar-end gear lever instead of the thumb levers supplied?
