Rohloff and Schlumpf-Equipped ICE Adventure FS Trike

ICE Adventure FS Trike

We recently built the wheels and installed a Schlumpf Speed Drive on this full-featured ICE tadpole-style Adventure FS trike for local shop Baytrail Trikes. Their customer was looking for a capable expedition trike with an emphasis on comfort, reliability, and wide gear range.

A special Schmidt SON XS-M dynamo hub designed specifically for trikes

This particular ICE trike features a high-end build kit that includes many parts that we carry and install on a regular basis. These include the Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 internally geared hub, a Schmidt SON XS-M trike-specific dynamo hub, and a Schlumpf Innovations Speed Drive. This combination gives the trike a massive range of gears and self contained lighting/charging capabilities.

The Schlumpf Innovations Speed Drive extends the already wide range of gears on the Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 by a factor of 1.65, giving it an overall range of 868%.  This allows the rider to be able to climb the steepest hills and pedal down the fastest of descents without spinning out. Shifting occurs by contacting your heel against the button in the center of the cranks.

Three wheel disc brakes, suspension, and Schwalbe Big Apple tires enable this trike to handle a wide variety of surfaces.

The wheels on this trike feature a SON XS-M dynamo and an ICE-branded high-flange front disc hubs, along with a Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 rear hub.  All three wheels were laced to sturdy 36 hole G-SPORT Birdcage BMX rims measuring 34mm wide.  The wide width of these rims compliments the Schwalbe Big Apple balloon tires, allowing for even larger volume and a more comfortable ride than they are already known for.

A Rohloff chain tensioner keeps everything running smoothly with the rear suspension
A Monkey Bone brake adapter secures the Rohloff OEM2 axle plate.
A parking brake on the rear wheel ensures that the Adventure trike won't roll away on its own

  1. How much would a sprint fs fitted this way cost?

  3. One could add a better gripshift. The boys at Flevobike (Netherlands) have an excellent version:

  4. Cycle Monkey built up a rear wheel with a Rohloff 500/14 and installed a Schlumpf High Speed side in the boom of my Ice Adventure. After over 5000 miles of daily commuting it still runs great and with no issues.
    Thanks guys.
