Schlumpf Mountain Drive-Equipped Cinelli Gazzetta

Cinelli Gazzetta in the form of a classically styled two-speed fixed gear

We built this beautiful Cinelli for the son of a good friend of ours who wanted a fixed gear commuter bike with classic styling.  We started with the bright red Gazzetta steel track frameset and added mostly polished silver parts and a two-speed Schlumpf Innovations Mountain Drive.  The Mountain Drive unit gives the bike a second gear for climbing while maintaining a clean looking drivetrain and the fixed gear format.

For the wheels on this Cinelli, we laced a set of smooth rolling Surly Ultra New high flange fixed gear hubs to Velocity Synergy road rims with SAPIM Laser spokes and brass nipples in a three cross pattern. This combination produces a wheelset that is tough and reliable enough for riding hard day after day but still comfortable on rough city streets.

The Schlumpf unit looks like a normal crank, except for the small shift button just visible on the right crank arm (left side of photo).
A clean drivetrain with two speeds and no cables or derailleurs.

The Schlumpf Mountain Drive is a planetary geared, two-speed crankset/bottom bracket that is manufactured in Switzerland and built to high standards.  Schlumpf offers several models of these units with different ratio changes, with the Mountain Drive being designed to give the lowest possible gear ratio with a 2.5x reduction, making it great for getting up steep climbs.

Shiny silver parts always look good on a classic steel frame like this

This was an interesting build for us and shows off one of the many useful applications of the Schlumpf two-speed internally geared cranksets. Fixed geared bicycles are touted for the low maintenance and simplicity they offer. Adding a Schlumpf unit to one of these bicycles expands its usefulness by expanding the type of terrain it can be used on while maintaining the clean look and high level of dependability.
