Surly Pugsley in its home environment |
In keeping with our recent trend of Rohloff SPEEDHUB-equipped Surlys, here's a decked out Pugsley for a customer in Seattle, WA. After riding a Rohloff SPEEDHUB on his Civilian Luddite, our customer wanted to build out a second bike around the SPEEDHUB for all-terrain riding.
It's not uncommon for us to have customers order a second Rohloff hub or complete bike from us once they experience the benefits of this drivetrain system. For our Seattle customer riding in all weather conditions, the SPEEDHUB proved its worth through reliable shifting and low maintenance requirements.
The Pugsley was the first commercially available fat bike, and has been winning fans for years. It has an offset 135mm rear triangle and extra wide 100mm bottom bracket shell to allow the 4.0" wide tires to clear the chain. The steel Surly fork also has 135mm spacing to provide tire clearance. The fork has rack and fender braze-ons, as well as mid-fork water bottle mounts for maximum utility.
We built the wheels on this Pugsley with a red anodized Rohloff SPEEDHUB and matching 135mm spaced Hope Fatsno front hub laced to Surly Rolling Darryl 82mm wide rims with SAPIM Race spokes and Surly Endomorph tires. These Endomorph tires are ideal for snow, sand, and soft soil conditions.

It can sometimes be challenging to match colors on components from different companies. Our customer wanted to build out the black frame with red components. We were able to put together some nice red parts for this build including Chris King bottom bracket and headset, Hope Fatsno front hub, Surly rim strips and Race Face chainring. The Avid brakes even have red adjuster dials!
This Pugsley is ready to take on a variety of terrain with those tires. |
If this bike looks familiar, you may remember our post featuring Tyler's Surly Moonlander. If you have any questions about this bike, or if you'd like to see what kind of fat bike we can put together for you, give us a call!
