Super Commuter: Co-Motion Camino with Schlumpf Speed Drive

This bike was built for a customer in San Francisco, CA who had a very specific idea of what he wanted in a commuter bike. He was looking for a clean, minimalist aesthetic and the zippy, responsive ride he was used to on his road bike in a fixed gear package. He also wanted to have more than one gear to handle the hills in San Francisco without getting off the bike and flipping the back wheel around to a different sprocket size. Disc brakes were a requirement for stopping on the way back down those same hills, as was a Gates Carbon Drive belt system for no drivetrain maintenance.

He liked the options that Co-Motion offered, and the Camino model covered all the bases. We worked with them to customize the frame to accept a belt and then installed a Schlumpf Drive internally-geared cranksets to provide two gear choices without adding any clutter and maintain the simplistic look of a single-gear bike. A rich paint color makes this bike stand out.

Ventana Wolfram Plus-Tire Mountain Bike Packages

We worked with Ventana Mountain Bikes USA to create a new plus-sized trail hardtail called Wolfram. Available with 27.5"+ or 29"+ wheels, the geometry follows current trends of longer top tubes for use with shorter stems, slack head angle for better stability on technical terrain, and short chain stays for a more playful feel and to make picking your way through obstacles easier. The oversized plus tires provide amazing traction and give the back end a little squish. We like to call it an all mountain hardtail.  Some might call it an enduro hardtail.  One of our friends would call it a Funduro. Whatever you call it, it is a very capable bike that is tons of fun to ride.

Completely manufactured in-house at Ventana's factory in Northern California, the Cycle Monkey editions of the Wolfram 27.5+ and 29+ feature dedicated cable routing for the Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 and stealth dropper seatposts and are belt drive compatible through Ventana's clever adjustable dropout system for the most maintenance-free trail bike drivetrain available. Check out the packages below or call us to discuss a custom build.

Bikes packages are available in two build levels:
  • Signature: $7090
  • Standard: $6040
Both packages come with a Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 14-speed internal gear hub and Gates Carbon Drive belt system.

Soma Sandworm Fatbike with Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14, Gates Carbon Drive Belt, and Lauf Leaf Spring Fork

San Francisco-based Soma Fabrications recently sent us a production version of their first fat bike frame, the Sandworm. This is a great affordable option for a Rohloff- and belt-compatible fat bike. The frame is designed with several key features to run a Rohloff-Gates Carbon Drive belt drive train.

We built this Sandworm up as demo with a Lauf Carbonara leaf spring fork. Assembly was very straight forward. With only a few quick spins on it, the geometry feels very neutral and familiar.

Previously, we built up a prototype version for form, fit, and function validation. Throughout the assembly, we made notes on the ease of assembly and integration with the Rohloff-belt drive train.

The production version of the Sandworm evolved based on lessons learned from the prototype, while maintaining the earlier tube shape and geometry.

The prototype was built with a 135mm offset rear triangle, which worked with the original SPEEDHUB 500/14, while the production version made the change to 170mm symmetric spacing and accepts the SPEEDHUB XL.

Demo Bike: Lenz Lunchmoney Full Suspension Trail Bike with Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 and Gates Carbon Drive Belt

This Lenz Sport LunchMoney is one of two new demo bikes that came about as a project to combine a Gates Carbon Drive belt drive and Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 internal gear hub with a full suspension frame. To accomplish this goal, we got in touch with Devin Lenz, who created one of the first - and still one of the only - suspension frames that is compatible with a tensioned single speed chain or belt. We worked with him on a few design details, then put in an order for a medium frame with 27.5+ wheels and an XL frame with 29+ wheels.

Co-Motion Americano Touring Bike with Rohloff SPEEDHUB and belt drive

This Co-Motion Americano was displayed in our booth at the North American Handmade Bicycle Show (NAHBS) last March in Charlotte, North Carolina. It is equipped with a Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 and Gates belt drive, as well as a full compliment of racks and panniers for loaded touring. Co-Motion Cycles – a company who specializes in building bikes for touring, commuting, tandems, and other unique bikes at their factory in Eugene, Oregon – lent us this bike to showcase an example of a fully loaded touring bike equipped with a SPEEDHUB. It attracted plenty of attention among show attendees; a crowd made up of handmade bike aficionados, many of whom travel from all over the world for a chance to see these bikes in person.

Soma Rush Fixed Gear With Belt Drive

When a local customer contacted us about building a belt drive-equipped fixed gear for him, we were excited to execute his vision. He wanted a bike that would be simple, lightweight, and durable for commuting around town quickly. He gave us a few general guidelines for the build but asked us to make our own recommendations for parts that would fulfill his requirements. His primary requests were that the frame be chrome colored and that he could use a belt drive system. He planned to use the bike to zip around Oakland and commute across town to work - primarily short, fast rides without much climbing.

Calfee Design Bamboo Road Bike with Rohloff SPEEDHUB and Dynamo hub

Bamboo is an unconventional material to build a bike from, but it has become an increasingly popular option as more and more riders discover the unique ride quality that it offers. We built this bamboo Calfee Design frame for a customer who enjoys long organized rides like the Seattle to Portland event along with exploring back roads around his home near Seattle. He also planned to use the bike for his daily transportation needs, so it was designed as a sturdy road bike/light duty touring bike. All the components needed to stand up to heavy mileage, rough roads, and the Pacific Northwest’s infamously damp climate. The Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 internal gear hub combined with a Gates Carbon Drive belt system provides a drivetrain that is nearly impervious to the elements, and the Schmidt dynamo hub-powered lights provide worry-free night time vision.

Tech Talk: Belt vs. Chain Drive

Belt drive on a modified Surly Pugsley
Chain drive on a stock Vassago Verhauen

Belt drives are one of the most exciting innovations in bicycle technology in recent years, as they have helped expose more cyclists to the advantages of internally geared drivetrains. A belt drive paired with a Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 or Schlumpf Drive creates one of the most reliable and low maintenance drivetrains available.

The entire belt drive system consisting of a belt and front and rear
sprockets weighs nearly half of a standard chain

Surly ECR with Rohloff SPEEDHUB and belt drive

We built this Surly ECR for a customer in Mount Pleasant, SC who is bikepacking through the backcountry of Colorado this summer and planning a future tour along the Rhine River in Germany. He has toured extensively through Europe in the past but was considering a new Rohloff SPEEDHUB-equipped touring rig to make his future adventures as enjoyable as possible. He had been comparing a number of 29er frames before the ECR was released last year, including Surly's Ogre model. He was drawn to the larger volume tires of the 29+ platform, but the Krampus frame didn't have the right geometry and mounting points he wanted. Once the ECR became available his decision was pretty easy, and he contacted us to put together this bikepacking-specific ECR with some unique modifications and a custom paint job.

Surly Pugsley with Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 and belt drive

Surly's Pugsley is the bike that brought fatbiking to the masses. Although not the original fatbike, it was the first fatbike that was widely available and offered at a price that many riders could afford. Since then, it has been updated with different frame colors and build kits each year while sticking to the same basic design centered around four inch wide tires. Surly's complete Pugsley "Special Ops" build has one of the most unique colorways yet, featuring a maroon frame, gumwall tires, and chrome rims, seatpost, stem, and handlebars. We converted this stock Puglsey to a Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 and Gates Carbon Drive-equipped demo bike for Wheel Life Cyclery bike shop near Calgary, Alberta, Canada. They will have the bike available for customers to test ride both the Rohloff and belt drive systems.

Co-Motion Klatch Fitness Road Bike with Rohloff SPEEDHUB and Belt Drive

We built this Co-Motion Klatch as a fitness-oriented road bike for a customer who wanted a comfortable, reliable bike to tackle the many great road rides around his hometown of Santa Rosa, California. His priority was simply to ride often, and the bike needed to stay out of the bike shop and on the road as much as possible. He was looking for a sporty-feeling bike that would motivate him to enjoy the outdoors and stay in shape. We were tasked with creating a Rohloff SPEEDHUB and Gates Carbon Drive-equipped road bike with durable components that would withstand plenty of hard riding, all within a lightweight package.

Monkey Ride: Neil’s Surly Krampus 29+ Mountain Bike with SuspensionFork, Belt Drive, and Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14

Neil built this Surly Krampus after test riding Tyler's Krampus and others we've built for customers and realizing that he needed one of his own. Naturally, he chose a Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14 and Gates Carbon Drive belt system for the drivetrain. The bike was finished just before Neil and Phil drove north for the Seattle Bicycle Expo, and Neil took it out for its first rides on the famed trails of the Pacific Northwest. The Krampus proved to be a very capable trail bike, with the oversize tires, stable handling, suspension fork, and dropper seatpost making for a fun all-mountain hardtail that is well suited to Neil's riding style.

We've put together quite a few Krampus builds for customers using the stock steel fork that comes with the frames, but most of these builds have had a touring or commuting focus, where the rigid fork is appropriate. The 3" wide tires that these bikes use provide some minor suspension that smooths out bumpy roads, but Neil wanted his own bike to be tailored towards more aggressive mountain biking where a suspension fork is a must - similar to the Krampus we built for the Interbike trade show: a durable ride capable of hitting jumps, rock gardens, and tight, twisty trails with ease.

Monkey Ride: Bike Friday with Belt Drive and Rohloff SPEEDHUB 500/14

Bike Friday built this frame for us to showcase at tradeshows as well as to offer to customers visiting our office wanting to test the Rohloff SPEEDHUB and Gates Carbon Drive drivetrain. Bike Friday hand builds each of their folding bikes to their customers’ specifications in their Eugene, Oregon workshop. They are the only U.S.-made folding bike-specific company, and they have built a devoted following for their craftsmanship and functional designs. Their goal of producing "bikes that fold" as opposed to "folding bikes" comes through in the handling of their bikes. We added a few special touches to make the bike stand out, including red anodized components and a custom build kit. The result is an ideal travel or commuter bike that is easy to fold up and pack into a suitcase or trunk of a car or take into an office or onto a subway train.

This bike is built around Bike Friday’s Silk frame, which was designed to work well with the Gates belt drive system. They offer the Silk frame setup for a variety of uses including road, touring, and commuting. Sliding dropouts adjust belt or chain tension, and 20 inch wheels are used as on most of Bike Friday's other models. The 20 inch wheels offer more comfort on bumpy roads and a more usable gear range than the 16 inch wheels they use on their commuter-specific Tikit model. The fold point for the rear end maintains the relationship between the crankset and the rear wheel so that the belt or chain will stay tensioned when folded.  The frame folds vertically around the bottom bracket, which results in a quick and user-friendly folding process. When completely folded up, the bike will fit neatly into a suitcase for easy travel.

While Bike Friday was building the frame, we sent a few components to our local anodizer to match them to the red color of the Rohloff SPEEDHUB and Schmidt SON28 hubs: front sprocket, rims, headset cups, Rohloff external gear mechanism cable box, and shifter housing. Once we had the parts back from the anodizer, we laced up the wheels using Velocity’s 20” Aeroheat rims with Sapim spokes and nipples for fairly light, strong and durability setup.

On most folding bikes, the shifting components are particularly susceptible to being damaged. The rear derailleur is one of the most delicate components on any bike, and can easily be bent or broken if it is bumped. On a folding bike in particular, the rear derailleur sits close to the ground due to the small wheels and is also exposed to being hit by the handlebars or front wheel during the folding process. It is also likely to be hit or damaged on a crowded commuter train with people filing in and out past the bike on the ground.

Additionally, small-wheeled bikes often use much larger chainrings compared to larger-wheeled bikes to account for the effect that wheel size has on the gear development. Front derailleurs are shaped to shift the size chainrings found on 26" or 700c-wheeled bikes, not the larger sized rings needed to maintain the same gear development on smaller-wheeled bikes. As a result, the shifting is usually slower and less crisp than is usually expected.

The Rohloff SPEEDHUB offers an optimal shifting system for a folding bike because the shifting components are all protected inside the hubshell and no shifting parts are exposed to being bent or damaged. It is also typically used only with one front chainring, so there is no impact on shifting precision by changing the ring size.

A conventional bike chain is also less-than-ideal on a folding bike because you're often coming in contact with the greasy, messy chain during the folding, packing, and transport processes. A Gates Carbon Drive belt requires no oil or grease, so your clothes and hands stay clean. This also means that no maintenance is required on it. Additionally, since the belts do not stretch, you get a service life that is significantly longer than with a chain - minimum twice as long and up to ten times as long depending on usage conditions.

We chose a variety of components that put the rider in a comfortable, ergonomic seating position. A custom Groovy Cycle Works Luv Handle handlebar with 45 degrees of backsweep mimics the natural resting position of a rider’s hands, Ergon’s GC1 grips feature a wide palm rest to take pressure off of the hands, and Selle Anatomica’s Titanico leather saddle is very comfortable right out of the box with or without padded shorts. We rounded out the component selection with Magura’s MT2 hydraulic brakes, which provide good stopping power and require minimal maintenance, and Schwalbe’s Big Apple tires, which feature a flat-resistant casing and large air volume to absorb the bumps.

When we took this bike out for a test ride, it felt very comfortable and handled much like a bike with larger wheels. It was hard for us to tell we were riding a folding bike until we looked down at the frame, which is the litmus test for any good folding bike. If you’re interested in the ideal folding commuter bike or would like to take this bike for a test ride, please contact us.
